Ambela High School Library Project
Providing essential learning resources and study space for rural high school students
Project Context
Location: Ambela High School, Ayehu Guagusa Woreda, Ethiopia
The community initially mobilized in 2018 to build essential school infrastructure including 8 classrooms, administration building, and toilets, enabling the opening of 9th grade. However, the school still lacked a fundamental facility required for quality education.
Critical Challenges
- The school's sub-standard condition lacked essential facilities like a library
- The Amhara Regional Education Bureau threatened to shut down the school unless required facilities were provided
- Serious shortage of text and reference books prevented lending books to students
- Most students come from rural areas and walk daily to school, needing a place to study during the day
- Increasing nationwide competition for higher education admission made exam preparation crucial
- Without adequate study space, students struggled to prepare for exams and university entrance
Project Solution
- Built a modern library facility to meet official educational requirements
- Furnished the library with reference books, tables, and chairs
- Created adequate space to accommodate many students simultaneously
- Provided essential study resources previously unavailable to students
- Enabled book lending system for students to access materials
- Provided a quiet study space for rural students during school hours

Project Significance
The library is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement for the functioning of the school and necessary for providing quality education to students.
With increasing competition for university admissions nationwide, having a proper library gives Ambela High School students the resources and space they need to study effectively and pass their exams.
This project transformed the school from being at risk of closure to having a fully functional educational facility that meets regional standards.
